Went fishing in Ft. Pierce last night on the incoming tide.
Got giant ladyfish for bait and I put them out on the 12 0 and 9 0 live.
My wife Katelyn was watching the rods for me while I went out to castnet more bait.
She told me she was getting tired and might go back to the car.
So I walked down the catwalk to get bait and she went back to the car.
I then hear my 12 0 screaming faster than I have ever heard.
I start running down the catwalk in the rain as fast as I could.
I get about 40 yards away and I hear a loud snap then see my 12 0 and Harnell go into pieces and fly into the water
![]()
I had a old castnet rope tied above the reel just incase this happened but all that did was snap my rod into two.
The rope was still tied on the catwalk.
We finally had king kong on but bad timing and lost much more than the shark ![]()
Here is a picture of the rod.

brand new 12 0 and Harnell with stuart reel seat with tuna block.
Gold and green diamond wrap with a gold snook on it with the name "Todd Huff" on it.
I might go for a swim today and try to find it.
My first shark on the tourny and bad luck ![]()

My sweet wife and i made the full moon trip down to the panhandle to meet up with Bill and Jack. THE 500 mile trip as alway really sucks but getting to shark with firedawg makes it all worth it. The weather was perfect and the ocean was just flat enough to get baits out.
my new ride--what we drove down in

(hope you didn't fALL for that)
wed night we get to the beach about 1 in the morning and meet bill and jack who are already setup and sharkin
The 1st couple of days were slow and and only a couple of sharks were beached

Jack got into a couple of bulls which where what he really wanted to target this trip
Again bait was one of the big keys to this trip and Bill was the man ---we fished legal red fish--rays--popano--and everthing bill pulled to the beach---note there were people fishing all around us and bill was the only one catching anything
like always we ate and drank in style
Friday night-- because the sharkin had been slow-- Bill demanded that the shark dance be performed to get the sharkin gods to anwser our prayers----i haven't done the shark dance in about a year---after a shot of mr crown and staring at the blaze orange moon theFEELING over took me ---bill told Jack that this was serious business and up to now had never failed us---
to jacks amazement the chant to shark gods began---i could see it in jacks eyes--''-what a nut am looking at chanting and who thinks he can really talk with the sharkin gods"
IT was only a matter of a few minutes and bill reel starts to pull drag---i turned to jack and asked as line as peeling off---do you believe now---he said yes --but i think there was a little disbelief----
WELL AFTER we beached 7 sharks and had a triple hookup that night-- all the doubt in his mind was gone
bills

THE double before it became a triple

my bull
the last sharks reeled in at daylight

well we were up most of the night and were dead tried------what a trip---we were beat up- fished out- and thinking what a trip
for the trip we beached 12 sharks----mostly bulls and a couple of bts
JACK nice to meet a guy from the U K--- tell the world -HOW was it hanging with ''T R F "
sharkin --only wish you could feel the power-- sonny
TEAM SharkLife Adam Lopez 11 ft 4 ich beastly Hammerhead Shark
Again this year I pursue my passion despite the tragedy that lurks on the edges of my existence in the wee hours of the night,on far away beaches and in the moment of battle I try and pass along what I have learned of catching MONSTERS in the last three decades ;it is my live's work.It is the satisfaction of that live's work fulfilled to see the young men I fish with gain the knowledge ,acquire the confidence, master there fears, and absorb the fighting spirit that enables them to jump in the surf with an angry beast when the moment arrives. An old master teaches by doing and No amount of reading or viewing internet sharking can truly prepare them for the reaction they will have when finally faced with a BEAST in the surf.It is in the heat of BATTLE joined by a primal instinct to overcome fighting alongside others that there mettle is tested and there fears are left to wimper by themselves swallowed by the wet cold sand they stand on. From these primal events ,with these ancient creatures ,on dark beaches the young are baptized in battle taught to carry the sword of our sport and take the fight forward.Making the big catches a reality breeds the positive spirit in the young fishermen of tommorow. My strength is not what it once was but my desire to fight big sharks rages on inside me as does the passion to leave my mark on this earth by doing what I do- to the best of my ability;it remains the same as when I was a younger man and my children were all alive.
On this night I was joined by three young men whom each wanted to catch a Big one and two would get there chance.Jd Fagan CJ Bridgett, and Adam Lopez all three from different Teams fishing in the 2013 BHC but willing to work together for a common goal of catching big sharks joined me on the sand on a night that was forecasted to bring down torrents of rain so we chose a spot with a nearby Life Guard stand just in case we needed the cover. Again the high tide was the marker for activity and first on the board was Fagan with a studly 8 foot bull shark foul hooked and fighting like a larger species with stripes.Jd proved that he has stepped into the Lion's Den and learned to come out victorious whooping on a strong Bull that taped out at 8 foot and that was the start of our action but soon afterwards at 3 am Fagan had to leave so it was the three of us with various different types of fresh bait soaking far and near beyond the sandbar. Our baits included cuda,aj,jack and bonitas and with the tippers nowhere near the anticipation was for a large predatory late night freight train and so it happened.

The 11 ft 4 inch HAMMER
This 11 ft 4 inch Hammerhead shark Adam Lopez caught is the type of shark that helped conceive the idea for a tournament with the name Big Hammer Challenge. This big hammerhead fought fiercely hard from the moment it was hooked taking various long runs and moving south and north quickly. The big hammerhead sharks are the hardest fighting shark that an angler can tangle with from a shoreline. Some fishermen dream of and wait years to finally hook a BIG HAMMER and others go through months of preparation for this tournament to have the chance of a fight with such a prehistoric and awesome shark and post it on these pages.Others like so many SFSC members fish very hard year-round and spend lots of money and put forth much effort just to do battle with the biggest of these magnificent powerful creatures but on this night Adam Lopez got his chance to shine .
Cj and Adam were guessing what the shark would be,and they thought big Tiger but when i saw the line moving off the reel so fast and steady i knew better. These two young sharkers have worked hard to learn the sport on the piers and then the beaches and bridges and it showed that they have caught a bunch of lemons and blacktips and even bulls but never up close and personal had they wrestled with such a big hammerhead. The very late hit(4:30 am) was made possible by baits exchanged late in the night after the high tide had hit it's peak around 2 :30. The gut feeling of a Monster to be caught the last two times I fished had come true finally on this calm night.
The battle was just starting as the massive shark approached the beach after an hour fight.Leader in hand the shark would whip it's huge tails and head out away from us and I being dragged by it's incredible strength. The shark fought us from the very moment Adam hooked it to the moment we were able to work it into the waters edge to measure and photograph. On the fourth attempt the 25 foot leader I wrapped around my left forearm as my right hand also grabbed the heavy mono to apply additional pressure and subdue the beast. On one attempt the shark drugged me out to my chest and I decided to release the leader or end up in water over my head.On the last attempt leader wrapped around my forearm I screamed out for Adam to bury the butt of the rod in the sand and jump in the water to help tailrope the thrashing MONSTER. Adam at first became frozen as he approched the giant swaying tail of the hammerhead and we had to yell at him to jump on the tail to slow this beast or risk it swimming back out and puttining us through further PUNISHMENT.By way of my military like commands we were able to secure the rope and when CJ who I am used to seeing drag 8 foot 300 lb Bull sharks up the shore tried and haul this hammer up he was stopped dead in his tracks with the weight of this enormous hammer.
Another struggle ensued to take multiple quick pictures with correct lighting ,correct distance from shark, correct holding of measuring tape all the while a very uncoeperrative shark beats it's tail and swaying it's head to free itself of its brief captors. What a mission- I'm screaming at the two young anglers and they are freezing up not used to this battle and unknowing of the next step I have to orchestrate the whole thing and keep these two moving quickly and watching for there safety from so many things that can go terribly wrong in an instant with such a large animal thrashing wildly to free itself. What a battle and Victory at the end. After a few minutes walking the big girl in the surf the release is complete and she swims off into the deep blue. Thanks Jd,thanks Adam and thanks Cj for an awesome night of top notch sharking.

Adam fights the big one we've been waiting for as CJ in the background watches and helps out

The best of all the overall shots and still does not show the actual size of the this shark .Notice CJ's hand is not quite to the tip of the sharks head and also the shark still is not completely straight to show its true size which I estimate at 11' 7" or or 11'8"
Other not so good OVERALL shots

the sharks head is underwater, the measuring tape is twisted, and the shark's back is rigid and not completely straight

the big momma Hammer would not stay stil -notice in this picture how the shark is bent the tail towards the camera

the shark was not completely in the picture in this shot

Well we were defiantly debating on not fishing considering my phone was blowing up with severe weather alerts. tornado warnings, and the wind was steady @ 20-25 . But this is where and when it counts!! we shot out to the spot it was pouring rain. and the wind smacking you in the face with the rain drops was like someone was getting a little crazy with a bb gun. surf was rougher than I have seen it the entire tournament. paddled my first bait seemed like it took forever going against the massive waves as far as the eye could see(not that that was very far thru the blinding rain) and the hard s.e. wind but got it done. got beat up pretty bad dumped the yak a couple times which was not to fun in the tremendous waves and current. but pushed on thru . I texted my good friend saying... "sitting on the beach soaked to the bone. cold. and getting whipped by wind....I LOVE THIS!!!!" DIE HARD! this is what its about love of the sport. and my teammate and love of my life out there just pushing threw it . not many women would do that.
and then BOOM tiagra 80w gets smashed !!! its all worth it. it is all out the window now we are no longer cold and don't care about the wind or rain. this is what we love !!! not THE ONE! but a nice reward for braving the storm,.
